Today I got to know my second supervisor for my master thesis - let’s call him A. - and as far as I can tell after a 20 min talk, he’s a great choice. I’m really happy with both of my supervisors: One of them, M., will give me advise regarding the actual design; and A. will cover the editorial site. I’m sure I will learn a lot about the organisation an structure of magazines, what to include and exclude.
He already gave me the challenge to think about the difference between a book and a magazine. The two dotview mags I’ve done so far could have been books as well; completly theme-based, both of them had their very own structure. But a magazine should not only tell a story with each issue, but with the series of issues as well, as A. explained. It’s an interesting thought that I haven’t had so far.
I noticed that I really should do more research into magazine design and structure to encounter more of these interesting points. I can’t wait to read “Designing News” by Franchi; a quite new book published by gestalten publisher. I’m hoping to find a lot of unthought thoughts in there. Actually, today was the first time I saw this book in a book store; it looked impressive. Today I also made a tour through different good magazine stores here in Berlin; for inspiration and to extend my “topology of magazine design”.
But yes, this was a successful day. Now I have supervisors for both parts of “Editorial Design”, for Editorial and for Design.
