Good day today! Because I remembered a quote from a random book that goes “Spend one hour per day thinking about what you want to do at this day.” Especially designers are threatened to do stuff without thinking. Sometimes, thinking can help – and today was the perfect day to do so.
I drew a big page plan with all the double pages I have and thought a lot about “diversity vs. sameness”, as explained yesterday. And then I decided that I want to bring some design-conceptual structure in the magazine. So now my mag functions like this: Every column that’s close to the center of each page is old-media content (because of the old type area, for example used by Tchichold) – and everything that’s at the edge of the paper is new-media-online-community content.
AND I won’t design the old-media content. I’d love to – I have some nice design ideas for them – but it would mean that the whole magazine would be super clustered. So I’m designing the old-media content in the same style as I designed the Bitcoins articles: I’ll google certain words from the articles and put appearing images from the search on the page. Meaning, I “google-image” my article illustrations. So what you can see above on the left side of the page isn’t finished yet; images are still missing. (On the right-hand side are two options for the opener of the The Sims Online story.)
Good day indeed. More structure is always good. I feel like I can estimate the amount of future work on the mag now – I couldn’t do this in the last days.
