Perugia, International Journalism Festival, day 3! I went to four talks today, the best being “The death of objectivity”. I had very, very high expectations. Basically, that was the panel I was looking forward to the most at the whole conference. And hey, it was amazing! A panel with actually different opinions! With tension! Different world views! Loved it.
Also, I had dinner with Linda, a 45min and wonderful conversation with two Dutch journalism professors who wanted my advise about teaching data visualisation, and a great dinner with lots of folks (as seen above).

Learnings?
After a story breaks, we first want the facts (something ”objective”). Then we want an analysis, commentary…something subjective.
The most important trait of a journalist is disloyalty.
All the facts in the world don’t necessarily add up to a complete and true view of the word. A documentary is a creative treatment of the real world.
Start-Ups articulate their mission daily, if not hourly. That’s not the case in news rooms.
Questions?
What do people mean when they use terms like “journalism”, “objectivity”, “transparency”, “independence”, “investigative”? How are these terms used?
As news consumers, we should ask: What is it exactly that we’re consuming there?
