Resonate, Belgrade, day 1! Today I walked through the city to get an overview of how this place works. I got a SIM card (because one assured me that the wifi at the conference place will be cap), I went to the Tesla museum and learned about induction, I went to supermarkets. I was amazed by how much Belgrade resembles Berlin, especially a Berlin from 30 years ago. And tried to understand the system of the Resonate conference.
Resonate, as far as I understood, is about digital art (performances + lectures), but is accompanied by a “LIVE” program which is about…digital…music. I think. Also, there are workshops you don’t need to pay for and “Intensive Workshops” you need to pay for. Some of the workshops and performances are part of the “normal” program and some are part of the “LIVE” program. And you need to sign up for some of the performances, but not all of them; and that doesn’t seem to be related to the idea of “normal” vs. “LIVE” program. Also, some of the performances are based on installations which can be seen all day long. On some days. It’s….yeah, I think I got that all so far. Also, I’m a little bit worried, because the talks don’t have titles. As a festival attendee, you’re supposed to be interested in the speaker, not his or her topic. I’m not sure if I like that - but everybody I meet is at this conference for the 2nd or 3rd time and is a huge fan. So…let’s see.
Also, the food seems to be wonderful. I had a great breakfast with a friend (Canadian pancakes! Cake! Sandwiches! Scrambled eggs! Smoothies!) and a great dinner in a hidden vegan restaurant with lots of Italian people. One of them is working for Arduino, which apparently employs ca. 40 people. I had no idea.

Learnings?
2 GB data for 7 days costs 2,40 Euro in Belgrade. I repeat: 2,40 Euro.
It’s easy to copy solutions, but it’s hard to find new ones. That’s why it’s also so hard to appreciate inventions or discoveries.
Questions?
What will I get out of this conference that’s helpful for my understanding of data vis?
