That was a really good day; ended by a really sad note. David Gilkey, a photojournalist / war photographer at the NPR Visuals team, was killed today in Afghanistan. I’m not really sure what to say. He was in the office for maybe one or two days since I’ve arrived at NPR. I shook his hand and he let me see his passport, and I was looking forward to get to know him more after his trip to Afghanistan. I feel very sorry for everybody on the team who knew him better than I did.

Besides that, it really was a great day. I had nice breakfast at “Ted’s Bulletin”, a famous and popular brunch place here in DC, and visited the American Arts museum, both with S. I have mentioned the American Arts gallery / Portrait gallery more than once on this blog - it’s my favorite museum in DC to date. However, I had no idea that there was a third floor with contemporary art, among others a Mark Lombardi! I really like Mark Lombardi. I was super excited when I saw that.

I also bought my first New York Times newspaper, ever, because Matt Willey, the art director of the New York Times magazine, said that the current issue is the one he likes the most of all the issues he designed. The weekend edition costs 6 Dollar, but you get a LOT of paper for that. And the magazine IS great.

In general, that was a highly enjoyable weekend. So much more inspirational than I expected it to be. I’m happy!

Learnings?

When referring to restaurants, you don’t say “there’s a line”. You’d say “there’s a wait.” For cinemas and theaters etc, however, saying “there’s a line” is totally fine.

NYT crosswords are so much better than any crossword puzzle I’ve ever encountered.
