Today was a sad day. The death of David Gilkey laid very heavily over the whole Visuals Team. We didn’t have a proper Scrum. Most of us didn’t get much done. The whole news room showed up for speeches and a moment of silence at noon. We had brandy. I saw many people crying today. It seemed impossible to be not at the edge of crying for the whole day.
The reaction from NPR which I experienced - mostly from my team and everybody who spoke at noon - was one of the best it could have been. We were encouraged to take time off and feel our feelings. My team created an atmosphere of “everything is OK. We are here for each other.” And from the higher management levels we were reminded that David believed in what he was doing; going to war zones to report from there. And the opportunity was used to show us that we’re doing a job where a lot is at stake.
Besides that I had a monthly fellow check in call, and got assigned two new projects for which I was very grateful (one is due tomorrow afternoon).

Learnings?
I should revisit the sentences I highlighted in books, bringing them on index cards and reordering them.
Curarion is filtering. Filtering means excluding things to be useful.
Questions?
How visually experimental can I be on NPR.org? How visually experimental is appropriate for the topics that are covered on NPR.org (eg diseases, war, failure, etc.)?
